Abstract
[extrat] This issue paper has been produced by MPG for the European Migration Dialogue (EMD). It is designed to encourage EMD members to consider the relationship between journalists, politicians and policy makers, civil society, and the broader community, and how each actor impacts on current debates and policy development. ; Starting with an overview of the role of the different actors, the paper then moves on to look closer at migration issues in the media, whether or not the media has an impact on migration issues, or whether the role of the media is addressed or discussed by civil society. The paper then looks at the news making process to identify different variables that impact on the media’s coverage of migration issues before moving onto provide practical advice to civil society organisations to help them influence the type of information covered in the media, the tone of that coverage, and through that, public opinion and government policy
